Veo, a smaller player in the rideshare micromobility space, just announced a bold new addition to its fleet: the Rover, a three-wheeled electric tricycle designed to make urban transportation more accessible to everyone. Unveiled at an event in Denver, where Veo now operates as the exclusive provider of shared bikes and scooters, the Rover represents a shift in how companies think about who gets to participate in micro-mobility.

The vehicle itself is straightforward. At 2.5 feet wide, it fits legally within standard three-foot bike lanes. It tops out at 10 mph, slower than typical rental scooters capped at 15 mph, prioritizing safety over speed. The Rover can travel roughly 45 miles per charge and includes a rear cargo basket that holds up to 100 pounds, making it practical for groceries, packages, or whatever urban riders need to haul.

The Accessibility Play

But the real story here isn’t the specs. It’s about who can actually use these things. Three-wheeled vehicles self-balance naturally, eliminating the anxiety of tipping over that keeps many people off traditional bikes and scooters. No kickstand to fiddle with. No precarious balancing act. Just stable, intuitive riding.

Veo worked with disability advocates, including the Disability Mobility Initiative and the Parkinson’s Foundation, to design the Rover. They consulted AARP to ensure older riders felt comfortable too. This wasn’t an afterthought or a compliance checkbox. It was the entire point.

“Our goal is to make sure that no rider has to be treated differently in order to go through more barriers to enter the system,” says Alexander Keating, Veo’s vice president of policy and partnerships. Cities increasingly expect micromobility companies to provide accessible options. Lime has Lime Assist, Bird launched accessible rentals in April, and Veo is doubling down with the Rover. But Veo is trying something different: making accessibility the mainstream offering rather than a separate program.

Technology Meets Urban Safety

Like other Veo vehicles, the Rover comes equipped with an AI-powered voice assistant that offers directions, location info, and traffic updates during rides. The software includes lidar sidewalk-detection technology designed to prevent riders from illegally zooming down pedestrian areas. Tech innovation like this matters in cities where rule-breaking has become a persistent problem.

Veo also collects anonymized geolocation and ride data to understand trip patterns and plan future expansion. This information helps the company decide where to scale the Rover next across the country.

A Surprising Reception

Keating admits he’s been surprised by how people respond to the tricycle concept. There’s a persistent cultural assumption that trikes are for kids or elderly riders, not everyday commuters. Yet early reactions suggest people might be warming up to them. Whether that enthusiasm translates into adoption remains to be seen. Trikes do have drawbacks: they’re heavier and more difficult to steer than two-wheeled vehicles, and that could matter for younger, more aggressive riders.

Veo is using Denver as a testing ground to figure this out. The company won an exclusive contract with the city in May, replacing Lime and Bird’s offerings. Now they have a captive market to learn whether the Rover can be genuinely cool, not just accessible, and whether regular people will choose it over existing options.

The micromobility landscape is crowded. Electric bikes are booming, and companies like Lectric are already building consumer tricycles. But the shared vehicle space is different. Veo is betting that cities will mandate accessibility and that riders will discover the Rover offers genuine advantages, not just tokenism.

Keating’s closing observation is telling: “I think [trikes] might be for everyone. We’re going to see.” That’s not confidence. That’s genuine curiosity. And that’s exactly the attitude needed to expand what mobility actually means in cities.
