But the reception has been decidedly mixed, with some calling it brilliant and others labeling it overpriced vaporware.
Micro is a compact keypad with six customizable “agent” keys at the top and six command keys below them. The device connects via Bluetooth or USB cable and lets you assign specific ChatGPT tasks to individual keys. You can toggle between different projects, control agents, and even use voice dictation by holding down a dedicated button.
The build quality is solid. We’re talking genuinely sturdy hardware here, with frosted keys and a minimalist design that, if we’re being honest, screams Apple aesthetics. The packaging certainly doesn’t help dispel that impression.
Here’s where things get tricky. Micro demands you memorize its color-coded system: white for idle agents, blue for thinking, green for completed tasks, and red for errors. You’ll also need to remember which specific projects are assigned to which keys. It’s not intuitive, and that’s a problem.

One user called it “a prank and not a real product.” Others argued serious coders would skip it entirely. Once you crack the learning curve, something interesting happens. The keypad becomes genuinely useful. Toggling between ChatGPT sessions is faster than managing multiple browser tabs. Combined with the voice dictation button, Micro can streamline workflows for people who live in ChatGPT. The efficiency gains are real, assuming you’re using the platform constantly.
But here’s the uncomfortable question Micro raises: Why spend a week learning a new device when your laptop keyboard already does everything? The value proposition only clicks if you’re already a ChatGPT power user who spends hours daily with the AI. For casual users, it’s dead weight.

The keypad itself isn’t necessarily a bad product. It’s just poorly positioned. It targets tech enthusiasts and hardcore coders, yet neither group seems particularly excited. The former might appreciate the novelty, but the latter demands proven utility. Micro exists in an awkward middle ground where it’s neither essential nor particularly affordable.
Your mileage with Micro depends entirely on your relationship with AI. If ChatGPT is central to your daily work, if you’re experimenting with agents and coding tasks, if you appreciate thoughtfully designed hardware with satisfying mechanical feedback, then $230 might feel reasonable. You might even enjoy the experience.
If you’re not a power user, don’t bother. The learning curve, the price tag, and the friction of adopting new workflows don’t justify the investment. Stick with your keyboard and mouse.
The real question OpenAI should be asking itself isn’t whether Micro works, but whether anyone actually needed it in the first place.
