The “Blink Twice” star sat down with Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” earlier this month to address the speculation that consumed tabloids and social media feeds back in 2019 and 2020. The answer? They’re just friends. Plain and simple.

“He’s really into art, and he’s very cool, and we became friends,” Shawkat explained during the August 16 interview. “Spike Jonze introduced us.” The filmmaker served as the unlikely bridge between the Oscar winner and the accomplished actress, leading to a friendship that apparently confused everyone watching from the sidelines.

Cohen seemed particularly fascinated by the rumor mill that had surrounded them years earlier. “I was obsessed with the Brad Pitt dating rumors,” he confessed. Even Kristen Stewart, Shawkat’s co-star and fellow interview guest, chimed in enthusiastically: “I was enthralled.” Shawkat responded with humor and a nervous cocktail sip, clearly ready to finally address what had become Hollywood lore.

The Burden of Proximity to Fame

What’s most revealing about Shawkat’s explanation is her casual observation that simply being seen with Brad Pitt automatically triggers dating speculation. “Everyone thought we were dating, because if you stand next to him, everyone thinks you’re dating. Like, even his own mother,” she joked.

This speaks to a larger phenomenon in entertainment culture where proximity to A-list celebrities gets interpreted through a romantic lens. While Shawkat might have been mildly frustrated by the endless speculation, there was at least one person thrilled by the rumors: her grandmother. “She saved the Us Weekly I was on the cover of,” Shawkat fondly recalled, finding some humor in the absurdity.

These days, both Shawkat and Pitt have moved on romantically. Pitt has been linked to jewelry designer Ines de Ramon since late 2022, while Shawkat has been in a relationship with Phil Burgers since at least late 2023, when they welcomed their first child together. The Brad and Alia saga has officially closed, though the internet will likely never stop wondering “what if.”

Cohen offered a philosophical note when he suggested, “There could be worse dating rumors.” Shawkat agreed. Indeed, in a world where celebrity gossip can spiral into genuinely damaging narratives, being falsely linked to one of Hollywood’s most eligible men isn’t exactly a tragedy.
