AJ McLean Gets Explicit on New Solo Single 'Into Your Heart'

AJ McLean is not holding back on his latest solo venture. The Backstreet Boys member, who now performs under his full name Alexander James McLean, dropped the steamy single ‘Into Your Heart’ on Wednesday (Sept. 16), and it’s a far cry from the boy band ballads that made him famous.

The track doesn’t mince words. Over a sparse, slinky hip-hop beat, McLean gets straight to the point with lyrics like ‘F*** my way into your heart / Say my name, we gon’ light this floor apart.’ It’s bold, it’s adult, and it’s entirely intentional.

A New Era for a Boy Band Veteran

After more than three decades with the Backstreet Boys, McLean ventured into solo territory last November with the Hi My Name is Alex EP. But ‘Into Your Heart’ signals something different: an artist ready to explore more mature territory without the constraints of a group dynamic.

‘This one just felt good from the second we made it,’ McLean said about the track. ‘There’s an energy to it that I love. One of the best parts of this chapter is having the freedom to follow the music wherever it takes me.’

That freedom is evident in both the music and its visual accompaniment. The accompanying music video is a love letter to 1979’s cult classic gang film The Warriors, complete with dance crews dubbed The Baseball Lockers, The AllStar Lizzies, The Lovers, and The Hip-Hop Riffs squaring off in a choreography battle on a gritty city set.

Dance has always been central to McLean’s identity as a performer, and this video lets him lean fully into that strength. The fight isn’t physical; it’s pure movement and rhythm, which feels more authentic to who he is as an artist.

‘Into Your Heart’ arrives as the lead single from McLean’s sophomore solo album, Sex, Love & Music, dropping November 27. This follows his January debut, My Name is Alexander James, which set the stage for his solo journey but lacked the cohesive vision that this new project seems to possess.

The progression from EP to debut to sophomore album has been rapid, but McLean’s clearly found his footing. He’s not trying to reinvent himself as some edgy provocateur. Instead, he’s authentically exploring the entertainment landscape as a solo artist in a way the group format never allowed.

The Better Man Tour

McLean isn’t just dropping music; he’s committing to the live experience. His first-ever North American solo tour, The Better Man, kicks off October 19 at Brooklyn Bowl in New York and runs through January 15 at the Craterian Theater in Medford, Oregon. It’s an ambitious schedule that shows he’s serious about establishing himself as a standalone music presence.

The tour dates suggest he’s building real momentum heading into the album release. These aren’t massive arena shows, but intimate venues that allow for the kind of connection and energy his solo work demands.
