New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani became an unlikely internet hero recently when he did something so rare it felt revolutionary: he admitted he was wrong. After constituents called him out on social media for riding his bike without a helmet, the mayor posted a video saying simply, “You’re right. I’ve got to do better,” then unboxed a new helmet.
Commenters were stunned. “I honestly feel like witnessing a politician simply say ‘you’re right, I’ve gotta do better’ just healed something within me,” one wrote. But beyond the refreshing display of political humility, Mamdani’s moment highlighted a genuinely serious issue: most people dramatically underestimate how dangerous unprotected cycling can be.
Dr. Jeremy Heffner, a trauma surgeon, paints a vivid picture of what happens when cyclists don’t wear helmets. “At casual riding speeds of 10 to 15 miles per hour, a rider thrown from a bike can suffer bleeding on the brain, skull fractures, and diffuse brain injury,” he explains. Picture being flung headfirst over handlebars at just 15 mph, watching hard asphalt rush toward your face.
A helmet’s inner foam layer is designed to absorb that destructive energy. Without it, your unprotected head takes the full, blunt force of impact. That sudden deceleration causes your brain to slam against the inside of your skull, turning a simple fall into life-threatening trauma.
The statistics back this up dramatically. According to large systemic reviews spanning multiple countries, helmet use is associated with about a 65% reduction in fatal head injuries and up to 70% reduction in severe head injuries like intracranial bleeding and skull fractures.
Dr. Alina Mitina, an emergency medicine specialist, has seen this play out countless times. “I’ve treated many cyclists who were able to go home to their families purely because their helmet took the brunt of the damage instead of their brain,” she says.
Here’s the problem: simply owning a helmet isn’t enough. Too many people wear them incorrectly, which dramatically reduces their effectiveness. A helmet that’s too loose, tilted back, or improperly buckled cannot provide the protection it was designed for.
Your helmet should sit level on your head, positioned low on your forehead about two finger-widths above your eyebrows. The side straps should form a ‘V’ around your ears, and the chin strap should be snug enough that only one finger fits between the strap and your chin.
Here’s a quick test: open your mouth wide. You should feel the helmet pull down against the top of your head. If it doesn’t, it’s not secured properly. Dr. Heffner puts it bluntly: “Get those things right, and the helmet can do what it was built to do. Get them wrong and you are essentially wearing a very expensive hat.”
Choose a helmet with CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) certification. If you ride an e-bike, look for the NTA-8776 standard, which is tested for higher speeds. Consider helmets with rotation-damping systems like MIPS or WaveCel, which reduce brain injury risk by absorbing torque during impact.
Wearing a helmet is your first line of defense, but it’s not your only responsibility as a cyclist. Make yourself visible with bright clothing, headlights, taillights, and reflective devices. Stay alert and avoid riding while distracted or wearing headphones.
Maintain a steady line, give advance notice with hand signals, and make eye contact with drivers whenever possible. Ride 3 to 5 feet away from parked cars to avoid getting hit by opening doors. If you’re a parent, model the behavior you want to see. Children are more likely to wear helmets when adults do. Research shows that when parents wear a helmet every ride, they send a powerful message that helmet use is normal and expected.
One final note: replace your helmet if it’s sustained a significant impact. The material can only absorb energy safely once. After a crash, that helmet has already done its job. Don’t skimp on protection because you’ve learned the hard way that crashes happen.
Mamdani’s willingness to listen to constituents about his own safety habits offers a lesson for all of us: admitting vulnerability and changing our behavior doesn’t make us weaker, it makes us smarter.
