Siege in Qusra Escalates Tensions

The U.S. Ambassador to Israel has delivered a sharp rebuke against Jewish settlers for besieging the home of an American Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank. In an unusually forceful statement, Ambassador Mike Huckabee called the siege a “horrific act of terror.”

Since Sunday, settlers have gathered near the home in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus, harassing those inside and defying Israeli military efforts to defuse the standoff. The group, which has included up to dozens of men, threw stones, attempted to dismantle a nearby stone wall, and prevented residents from leaving despite critically low supplies of food and water.

Lou Ridi, the home’s owner, told the Associated Press that his 48-year-old brother and teenage nephew had been trapped inside for days without basic necessities. “We are prisoners in our own house, hostages in our own house,” Ridi said.

Military Response and Unclear Future

On Thursday morning, Israeli military forces evacuated Ridi’s brother Qusai Abu Rida and his teenage son from the property. However, the fate of the home and at least one other targeted property remains uncertain. Israeli troops intervened in recent days to restore order, dismantling what the military described as “two illegal outposts” on the outskirts of Qusra and detaining one Israeli.

The military also deployed additional soldiers to carry out “defensive missions and patrols” in the area, located about 16 kilometers south of Nablus. Journalists reported that roads into the village were closed, though Israeli police did not immediately clarify whether any Israeli civilians faced arrest.

Huckabee’s statement represented an unusually sharp rebuke from a U.S. official, even as he defended the Israeli military’s response. This is noteworthy given Huckabee’s longtime support for Israel’s settler movement and his previous statements supporting Israeli control over the occupied West Bank.

Pattern of Settler Harassment

This siege didn’t emerge in a vacuum. Ridi explained that settlers had been harassing his home for months, systematically cutting off water and electricity while throwing stones that damaged his property and at least one neighboring house. The escalation reflects broader tensions in the region, where news of settler violence has become increasingly common.

Last month, a mosque in Qusra was set on fire in what appeared to be another settler attack. That incident followed the killing of an Israeli settler, which triggered violence that ultimately left two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian villagers dead.

The Larger Context

Palatestinians and the Israeli political opposition accuse Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline government of overlooking settler attacks on Palestinians. As clashes have intensified over recent years, critics argue the government tacitly enables these actions by failing to enforce accountability.

Settlers continue building outposts throughout the occupied West Bank, a strategy condemned by much of the international community as deliberately dismantling prospects for an independent Palestinian state. The philosophical divide remains stark: Palestinians seek the West Bank, captured by Israel during the 1967 war, as part of a future state, while many settlers and their supporters argue the entire territory should belong to Israel based on historical, religious, and security grounds.

Home security footage from Thursday morning showed a few settlers still positioned near the damaged stone wall, suggesting the situation remained tense even after military intervention. The siege of Qusra represents yet another flashpoint in an ongoing cycle of news of conflict that shows little sign of resolution.
