Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) has ramped up his attacks on Dr. Anthony Fauci, calling the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director a “fool” and demanding he be “locked up” and “put in prison.” Speaking with Newsmax on Capitol Hill, Tuberville claimed Fauci should face trial “in front of the American people,” accusing him of lying about COVID-19’s origins.

These remarks came on the same day Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right during a tense Senate hearing, declining to answer questions posed by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). Paul has maintained a yearslong adversarial relationship with the longtime public health official.

The Fifth Amendment Decision

Fauci’s decision to remain silent wasn’t random. He explained that Paul’s “unhinged obsession” with getting him imprisoned left him no choice. “The only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up ‘behind bars,’” Fauci stated.

This legal move underscores the increasingly hostile environment surrounding COVID-related discussions in Congress. What was once a health policy debate has devolved into partisan theater, complete with predetermined outcomes and inflammatory language.

Debunking the Claims

Tuberville’s accusations lack factual support. There is no evidence that Fauci lied to Congress about COVID-19’s origins. Fauci has repeatedly denied these allegations, and health experts including the World Health Organization have consistently maintained that the virus most likely jumped from animals to humans, despite ongoing speculation about lab origins.

When it comes to vaccines, Tuberville’s assertion that “people are still dying” from coronavirus vaccines is equally misleading. According to the National Library of Medicine, deaths directly linked to COVID vaccines are extremely rare. This gap between rhetoric and reality highlights how political narratives can distort public health information during polarized times.

The Pardon Controversy

Tuberville also criticized President Biden’s preemptive pardon of Fauci, calling it “embarrassing” that the doctor “took advantage of the so-called pardon.” Biden issued several preemptive pardons in his final moments as president, extending immunity to both family members and Fauci.

Interestingly, Tuberville suggested on SiriusXM’s “David Webb Show” that Biden’s federal pardon might not protect Fauci from state-level lawsuits in Alabama, a claim that would require significant legal innovation to succeed. The Alabama senator, who is running for governor, appears intent on keeping Fauci in the headlines as a political issue.

These attacks represent more than just disagreement over pandemic policy.
