Tony Romo’s high-profile role as CBS Sports’ lead NFL analyst has hit a major speed bump. The network announced Friday that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is on leave “until further notice” following his arrest last week on suspicion of driving under the influence. JJ Watt will step in alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson to cover the network’s top-tier NFL matchups during Romo’s absence.

The 46-year-old was arrested on July 23 after being stopped while driving south on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office report, Romo failed field sobriety tests before being taken into custody, booked, and subsequently released. A court date is set for September 21.

The Details of the Stop

Police pulled Romo over after observing him passing vehicles in a gore area, the section that separates interstate traffic from on-ramp entries. During the traffic stop, Romo apparently questioned what a gore area actually was, which raised eyebrows among the officers on scene.

Body camera footage released this week showed a different side of the interaction. Romo told deputies he had been coming from a golf course and was heading “to visit grandma and grandpa” when he was pulled over. A deputy noted that Romo had “red glassy eyes” and an “odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.” Citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office also indicated that an open bottle of alcohol was found on the passenger side of Romo’s black Jeep during an inventory before the vehicle was towed.

Interestingly, Romo has ties to the Wisconsin area. He attended high school about 35 miles from Milwaukee in Burlington, Wisconsin, which raises questions about whether this was a homecoming gone wrong.

Romo has been the face of CBS’ entertainment and sports coverage since taking over as lead game analyst in 2017. His broadcasting success came after an impressive 13-year NFL career spent entirely with the Dallas Cowboys, from 2004 to 2016.

He also held the passing yards record with 34,183 yards until Dak Prescott surpassed him last season.
