TikTok launches AI shopping assistant to keep users buying in-app

TikTok rolls out conversational AI shopping agent and one-click checkout to capture more of users' shopping journeys without leaving the platform.

TikTok launches AI shopping assistant to keep users buying in-app

TikTok is making a serious play to become a full-service shopping destination. The platform just announced two new features that could reshape how millions of people discover and purchase products: an AI shopping assistant and direct in-app checkout functionality.

The New Shopping Assistant

The conversational AI agent is designed to feel like talking to a knowledgeable shopping guide right inside the app. TikTok says it understands context and remembers user preferences throughout the conversation, offering real-time guidance on product details, shipping information, sizing, and availability. When you’re ready to buy, it can help you complete the purchase without friction.

This is clever positioning. Rather than sending users to external AI tools like ChatGPT when they have product questions, TikTok keeps them within its ecosystem. The company built these features in partnership with major commerce platforms including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe, which gives the initiative real infrastructure behind it.

One-Click Buying from Your Feed

The second piece of this puzzle is the one-click checkout feature. Users can now buy directly from brands appearing in their For You feed, the algorithm-driven main feed where most TikTok users spend their time. It’s the definition of frictionless shopping, which is exactly what impulse-driven social commerce needs to thrive.

When you combine a shopping assistant that answers questions with a checkout system that takes seconds to complete, you’ve basically eliminated every barrier between discovery and purchase. That’s the entire game right there.

Beyond TikTok Shop

While TikTok Shop has been the company’s main marketplace since launching in the U.S. in September 2023, these new features represent a broader strategy. Rather than concentrating all ecommerce activity in a dedicated hub, TikTok is distributing shopping tools across the entire platform. This move makes intuitive sense: people are already scrolling through content they love. Why force them to leave that experience to shop?

The numbers suggest this approach is working. eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated roughly $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, capturing about 18% of all U.S. social commerce in just a few years.

Why This Matters

TikTok’s influence on shopping continues to grow at an almost startling pace. The company’s recently released Economic Impact Report found that activity on the platform helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses. More striking: 54 million Americans said they had purchased a product after watching a TikTok video.

These new features represent TikTok’s recognition that [this tech trend is only accelerating. By embedding AI-powered shopping directly into the content feed, the platform is essentially saying: we’re not just a place where shopping happens, we’re the place where shopping should happen.

The real competitive threat here isn’t to other shopping platforms. It’s to companies like Google and ChatGPT, which have traditionally captured the moment when users ask questions before buying. If TikTok can become the primary place where users browse, ask questions, and purchase all in one seamless experience, it’s reshaping consumer behavior in fundamental ways.
