Steve Lacy is about to give us something new. His third album, Oh Yeah?, lands July 17 via RCA Records, and from what we’ve seen so far, it feels like a departure from the vibe-heavy sound that defined his earlier work.
The album’s lead single, “The Feeling,” is an emotionally raw track about relationship turbulence. “The heart takes what it wants / I’m not scared to bleed, you know our history,” he sings, later pleading, “Am I your baby? Am I your baby?” It’s the kind of lyric that lands differently after you’ve lived through it.
According to reporting from Rolling Stone, Lacy has been teasing Oh Yeah? since last year, sharing “Nice Shoes” as an early preview. He told the publication that he recorded portions of the album in Paris, describing the city as inspiring him through its “clarity” and older European atmosphere.
The press release frames the album as the result of a four-year journey where Lacy “found himself feeling at home in foreign countries and situations and less at home at home.” That’s a quietly powerful statement, and it tracks with the direction his lyrics seem to be heading.
Here’s what stands out most: Lacy seems to be taking his words seriously now. He admitted to Rolling Stone that earlier in his career, words were “always just kind of secondary” to the beat and bass line. His mindset has shifted. “Now I’m like, ‘OK, I want to say shit how I would say shit.’” That’s a subtle but meaningful evolution for an artist who built much of his early reputation on production prowess.
The music video for “The Feeling” was directed by Matt Castellanos, adding another creative layer to the release.
What does this mean for the album? It’s hard to say without hearing the full project, but if the single is any indication, Lacy is leaning into vulnerability in a way that might surprise listeners who came to him for slick grooves. The industry has long rewarded artists who balance introspective lyricism with sonic innovation, and this could position Oh Yeah? as a compelling entry in his discography.
We’ll hear it for ourselves when July 17 arrives.
