We’ve all felt it: that creeping dread when we’re running on fumes. New research finally explains the mechanism behind why exhaustion and anxiety go hand-in-hand, and the answer traces back to our evolutionary past.

When you skip sleep, your brain essentially treats it as a survival emergency. “Our bodies and brain view sleep loss as a reason to turn on the emergency engines in order to survive,” explains Eti Ben Simon at the University of Texas at Dallas. It’s a “better safe than sorry” approach evolution handed down to help our ancestors navigate a world full of predators. The problem? That ancient safety feature doesn’t quite fit modern life.

The Hypervigilance Trap

About a third of Western adults struggle with sleep problems at least weekly, and anxiety disorders, the most common mental health condition, seem to feed the cycle. Previous studies showed that after 35 hours awake, the brain’s emotional centers spike more than 60 percent in activity when exposed to disturbing images compared to well-rested states. But those experiments only flashed images for seconds. Real threats don’t work that way.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne wanted to test something closer to reality. They recruited 54 healthy young adults and split them: half stayed awake overnight (tracked carefully), half slept eight hours in a lab. The next morning, everyone entered an immersive virtual world.

It started pleasant enough, with a bright office and gentle music. Then participants descended into a basement where they had to collect lanterns in dark rooms filled with ominous sounds: crying, footsteps, whispers. For about 10 minutes, researchers measured their heart rates and skin-conductance levels, tracking physical stress responses.

Adaptation vs. Survival Mode

The results were striking. Everyone showed stress when first encountering the threatening basement. But when well-rested participants returned to those same rooms, their stress dropped noticeably, suggesting their brains had adapted. Sleep-deprived participants? Their stress levels barely budged on repeat visits.

“Sleep deprivation may result in a state of hypervigilance, which, if it becomes chronic, may take the form of pathological anxiety,” says researcher Emma Sullivan. Essentially, the exhausted brain gets locked in emergency mode, unable to learn that the threat is manageable or repetitive.

Interestingly, one subgroup within the sleep-deprived participants reported feeling less anxious despite physical measurements showing they were stressed. These individuals had greater heart rate variability, meaning the time between heartbeats naturally fluctuated more. This metric reflects cardiovascular health and resilience.

Sullivan suggests that moderate-to-vigorous exercise could increase heart rate variability, offering a potential intervention even when sleep deprivation can’t be prevented, such as for shift workers or new parents.

Breaking the Cycle

Treating sleep problems directly remains crucial, since anxiety and poor sleep fuel each other. Cognitive behavioral therapy can improve both simultaneously, addressing the thought and behavior patterns that perpetuate insomnia. But what if you can’t sleep tonight? Recovery naps or scheduled sleep sessions could help partially offset the brain’s inability to adapt to ongoing threats.

The implications stretch beyond feeling cranky. When your brain gets stuck in survival mode, you’re essentially seeing threats everywhere, unable to contextualize or normalize potentially stressful situations. That hyperalert state might have saved our ancestors from being eaten, but today it might cost you your ability to focus at work, maintain relationships, or simply feel calm in an unpredictable world.

The next time someone dismisses sleep as optional, remember this: your ancient brain is still treating fatigue like a predator is stalking you.
