Dr. Kathryn Ayres, lead researcher at Beneath The Waves, witnessed this coordinated behavior firsthand. “We document how one orca holds the sunfish and lets go just before another orca hits it at high speed, causing the tissue to break apart into thousands of pieces,” she explained in a Frontiers in Ethology publication.

Sunfish present an unusual challenge for ocean predators. These gelatinous giants can exceed three meters in length and weigh up to 2,000 kilograms. They’re not defenseless, but their habit of rising to the surface to rest and regulate body temperature leaves them vulnerable to attack. In the Gulf of California, orcas hunt sunfish more frequently than perhaps any other prey species.

The Technique in Action

Two separate incidents, filmed more than a year apart, revealed this remarkable hunting pattern. In July 2024, Ayres observed a group of orcas, including a juvenile, handling a dead sharp-tail sunfish they had already killed. A female gripped the fish by its large tail fin while a male gathered speed and charged directly at them.

The female released the sunfish at the critical moment. The collision’s force caused the fish’s tissue to disintegrate into smaller pieces that drifted throughout the water column. The juvenile then consumed the manageable fragments while the adults finished the remaining carcass. A second incident, filmed by Héctor Franz in September 2025, followed an identical sequence: holding, releasing, ramming, and feeding.

The precision required for this behavior is striking. One orca maintained the carcass in a steady position, allowing its partner to strike with maximum accuracy. Researchers emphasized that since the sunfish were already dead, the impacts served a processing function rather than a killing blow.

Why This Matters

The ramming technique itself isn’t the only discovery here. Sunfish possess a gelatinous outer layer called a capsule, and both this layer and the skin contain distinct microbiomes. When tissue fragments scatter, microbial communities disperse into surrounding water and alter nutrient composition.

Yet feeding efficiency may not explain everything. The behavior might represent parental investment, with adults breaking prey into smaller portions for younger orcas. “Orcas often tear apart prey and share it with other members of the group, including calves and juveniles,” Ayres noted.

There’s another possibility: social bonding or simple play. Orcas are famous for toying with their food, and this ramming technique could serve entertainment purposes alongside practical feeding.

A Mystery That Remains

Interestingly, this tissue fragmentation has only been recorded with sharp-tail sunfish. Other larger sunfish species may not break apart as easily under similar impacts, suggesting something distinctive about this particular prey’s physical composition.

Scientists still don’t know whether the same individual orcas participated in both documented events. High-quality footage remains scarce, particularly clear views of dorsal fins and eye patches needed for individual identification. This gap highlights why continued scientific observation remains crucial.

Ayres stressed the importance of collecting quality identification photographs. “We are still seeing new techniques of how orcas hunt and process their prey. They’re one of the most iconic marine predators in the world, yet they continue to surprise us.”
