Nicole Kidman has kissed some of Hollywood’s most eligible leading men. Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and plenty of others have had their moment on screen with the Oscar-winning star. But apparently, there’s one thing that can instantly kill the chemistry between even the most accomplished actors.
Bad breath.
On Wednesday’s episode of the “Las Culturistas” podcast, Kidman didn’t hold back when discussing her biggest pet peeve. She straight-up called it a dealbreaker, the kind that no paycheck in the world could fix.
“I cannot stand bad breath,” she said bluntly. “I mean, this is a dealbreaker for me. You could be the most gorgeous, gorgeous guy, and you come at me with bad breath, and I’m like, ‘no.’”
When Alexander Skarsgård Met His Match
Here’s where things get spicy. During the “I Don’t Think So, Honey” segment, Kidman revealed exactly which co-star learned this lesson the hard way. And it was none other than Alexander Skarsgård, her troubled love interest from HBO’s “Big Little Lies.”
The two had electric chemistry as Celeste and Perry Wright during Season 1 of the hit series. Both even won Primetime Emmy Awards for their performances. So what went wrong during filming?
Falafel.
“When Alexander Skarsgård ate a falafel sandwich before we did the scenes in ‘Big Little Lies,’ I’m like, ‘No, no, no, Alex. I’m meant to be kissing you and into you. Put away the falafel now,’” Kidman recalled to podcast hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.
She wasn’t joking either. The actor added that “bad breath does not turn me on,” emphasizing just how serious this is for her. And apparently, Skarsgård got the message loud and clear because she quipped, “I’m sure he did not eat a falafel ever again.”
When Smell Becomes Love Language
But it’s not all about what turns Kidman off. She also revealed which celebrity smells absolutely intoxicating to her. Spoiler alert: it’s Rihanna.
“Rihanna,” she gushed without hesitation. “We don’t need to unravel it or decipher it, just know it’s all true. It’s intoxicating, it is like, ‘I will follow you around.’”
The comment is genuinely hilarious because it shows that for Kidman, scent and taste aren’t just physical preferences. They’re tied to genuine attraction and connection. She told the podcast hosts that “the taste of the mouth and the smell of the mouth is very important” to her, which honestly makes a lot of sense when you’re literally putting your face against someone else’s for hours during filming.
The Unglamorous Reality of Hollywood Romance
What makes this whole thing relatable is how unglamorous it really is. We see these cinematic kisses and assume it’s all passion and perfection. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, actors are worried about whether their co-star brushed their teeth.
Kidman’s willingness to call this out publicly is refreshing. Too many celebrities pretend everything on set is magical. But the truth is that chemistry isn’t just about looks or acting ability. It’s about the small details, the things nobody talks about in interviews.
The fact that she’s so specific about it too, mentioning the falafel incident like it just happened, suggests this genuinely bothered her. And fair enough. If you’re supposed to portray romantic attraction while someone’s breath is throwing you off, that’s an actual professional problem.
It’s funny to think that Skarsgård probably had no idea his lunch choice was becoming legendary Hollywood gossip until he heard this podcast episode. That’s the kind of thing that follows you around forever in this industry.
When you’re fighting for authenticity in your scenes, sometimes the most authentic thing you can do is tell your co-star to ditch the falafel.
