Duran Duran didn’t waste time announcing their presence in 2026. On Thursday, the new wave legends dropped “Free To Love,” their first new track of the year, and it arrives with an old friend in tow: Nile Rodgers, the Chic mastermind who’s been collaborating with the band since the mid-1980s.
The song positions itself as something bigger than just another single. According to keyboardist Nick Rhodes, it’s a “call to all the people out there who want peace, hope and understanding to prevail” and, more directly, an “anthem for freedom.” That’s a lot of weight to place on a track, but the band seems genuinely invested in the idea that music can be more than entertainment.
When Electricity Meets Purpose
Rhodes described the creative energy between Duran Duran and Rodgers in visceral terms: “Every time we plug in and play with Nile, the electricity he generates could light up a whole city.” Rodgers returned the sentiment, framing their collaboration as rooted in shared values. “My love for Duran Duran and what our music together has always been about is the love we share for our song’s deepest meanings,” he said. “Whatever chaos is going on outside, inside the studio we’re free to love our peace.”
It’s the kind of talk that could easily slide into pretension, but the track’s visual execution grounds it in something tangible. The music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund and featuring British broadcaster Clara Amfo, sets the band amid a glittering disco party. It’s nostalgic without being stuck in the past, which feels like the entire point.
A Partnership That Started in 1984
This isn’t a newfound collaboration. Duran Duran and Rodgers first connected with a remix of “The Reflex” back in 1984, a song that would become the band’s first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit. That’s over four decades of working together, which makes the continued partnership feel earned rather than manufactured. The band isn’t chasing trends or calling in favors; they’re returning to something that clearly works.
What’s Next For the Legends
Beyond the new single, Duran Duran has plenty scheduled. They’ll headline London’s BST Hyde Park on July 5 with Scissor Sisters as special guests, marking their second time topping the bill at that venue. Before that, they’re hitting California’s Beachlife Festival, followed by a multi-night Las Vegas residency at the Fontainebleau and a month-long European tour.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees aren’t exactly retreating into heritage act territory. They’re working, releasing new material, and apparently still believe they have something to say. Whether “Free To Love” resonates as an anthem for the moment or becomes another streaming artifact remains to be seen, but at least they’re trying to push beyond the obvious nostalgia play that could define a band of their stature.
