Bella Thorne Opens Up About Being Pitted Against Zendaya at Disney

Bella Thorne is getting candid about one of the darker sides of the entertainment industry: how studios weaponize competition between young female stars. On a recent episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the actress opened up about being aggressively pitted against her “Shake It Up” co-star Zendaya during their Disney Channel heyday.

Thorne and Zendaya became household names playing best friends CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue on the hit show, which ran for three seasons and 75 episodes between 2010 and 2013. But behind the scenes, their real-life friendship was being deliberately undermined by the very people orchestrating their careers.

“With women it’s like, ‘We have to make you all beg for one spot… if you can beat each other down and scrap to whatever extent we’re asking you two [and] eat yourselves alive while we have all these spots but for women, it’s just one of you,’” Thorne recalled on the podcast. “The patriarchy has been doing it since the beginning of time.”

What makes this revelation particularly jarring is the age factor. Both actresses were just 12 years old when this dynamic began. Thorne emphasized the absurdity of the situation: “You go back and we were 12! What’s wrong with you? We are supposed to be best friends. We play best friends. It got pretty bad.”

The toxic rivalry eventually reached a breaking point. During filming of a “Good Luck Charlie” crossover episode, Thorne and Zendaya made a bold decision. They literally escaped the set during live taping to have a private conversation away from the chaos.

“We escaped to another set in the middle of live taping, which is really ballsy, badass and rebellious. We snuck out,” Thorne explained. “We knew we had three scenes until we were up again and we just went to talk. We got into it, hashed it out, and it was so beautiful.”

A Turning Point in Their Relationship

That stolen moment became a watershed moment for both actresses. Thorne described it as her first genuine “woman to woman, girl to girl” conversation where both parties could actually be heard and understood.

“You can both be heard about the different things you’re experiencing and what people are saying and how they’re trying to do this to you. You can walk out of there seeing each other,” she said. “It was one of the most genuine girl-on-girl talks.”

The pair has previously acknowledged how close they came to losing their friendship entirely. In a 2021 interview with Us Weekly, Thorne admitted that “all of a sudden everyone is pitting you against each other and that fed into our heads. It made us not [be] friends in that first season.”
