Zayn's 'Sideways' Is Everything We Didn't Know We Needed Right Now

Zayn just released “Sideways” and honestly, it’s the kind of song that hits different when you’re scrolling through your phone at 2 AM. The R&B track is stripped back, vulnerable, and exactly what we’ve come to expect from someone who’s spent the last few years genuinely exploring who he is as an artist.

The lyrics cut straight to the point. “I miss lookin’ at you sideways/ face-to-face with your lips on mine,” he croons over production that feels like it was made in a late-night studio session where everyone just got comfortable. There’s nothing flashy about it. No oversaturated production. Just a guy reflecting on a lost connection and the small, intimate moments that stay with you long after someone’s gone.

Konnakol Is More Than Just an Album Title

This single is the latest taste of Zayn’s forthcoming album, Konnakol, dropping April 17 via Mercury Records. The title actually means something specific to him, which you can tell just by reading his statement about it. He’s not just throwing words at a wall here.

“Konnakol in its definition is the act of creating percussive sounds with one’s voice but what it means to me lies somewhere much deeper,” Zayn explained. He talks about heritage, about knowing who you are and where you come from. That’s the kind of artist statement that usually gets eye-rolled on social media, but when you listen to something like “Sideways,” it actually makes sense.

The album follows Room Under the Stairs from 2024, which he made with collaborator Dave Cobb. That project was the definition of stripped-back. Now with Konnakol, Zayn’s working with Malay again, the producer behind his earlier records Mind of Mine and Icarus Falls. There’s continuity here, but also clear growth.

A Tour That’s Actually Worth Your Time

If you’re into this direction Zayn’s heading, the Konnakol Tour is coming. The 31-date global run kicks off May 12 in Manchester at AO Arena before hitting London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and São Paulo. It wraps November 20 in Miami. That’s a serious commitment to the music, not just a quick cash grab tour.

One Direction’s Quiet Takeover of 2026

Here’s what’s wild though. Zayn isn’t the only One Direction member putting out fresh material right now. In January, Louis Tomlinson dropped How Did I Get Here?, featuring the single “Imposter.” Then there’s Harry Styles, who just released Kiss All the Time, Disco, Occasionally earlier this month and performed on Saturday Night Live to support it.

It’s like entertainment is having this moment where these guys are all releasing new work at basically the same time, but completely separately. No reunion. No coordinated rollout. Just four different artists doing their own thing.

The contrast is actually fascinating. Each one sounds nothing like the others because they’ve all gone in completely different directions creatively. Zayn’s exploring R&B and his cultural heritage. Harry’s doing something experimental. Louis is doing his own thing. It’s less “One Direction reunion energy” and more “we all grew up and here’s what we actually want to make now.”

“Sideways” works because it doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is: a song about missing someone, about those late-night moments that stick with you. In an industry that’s constantly pushing for the next big thing, sometimes the most radical move is just being honest about a feeling everyone’s experienced.
