A VRLA/SMF batteries is more commonly known as a sealed lead-acid or maintenance free battery. It is a type of lead-acid rechargeable battery. Due to their construction, the Gel and AGM types of VRLA/SMF can be mounted in any orientation, and do not require constant maintenance. The term "maintenance free" is a misnomer as VRLA/SMF batteries still require cleaning and regular functional testing. They are widely used in large portable electrical devices, off-grid power systems and similar roles, where large amounts of storage are needed at a lower cost than other low-maintenance technologies like lithium-ion.
VRLA/SMF Batteries are fitted with explosion proof safety valves, which can't be opened without a special tool. VRLA/SMF batteries can be located next to the charger or next to the controls. No separate battery room is required. Hence reduction in copper bus/cables from charger to battery and battery to system.
The electrode reactions in all lead acid batteries including VRLA/SMF batteries are basically identical. As the battery is discharged the lead dioxide positive active material and the spongy lead negative active material both reacts with the sulphuric acid electrolyte to form lead sulphate and water. During charge, this process is reversed. The coulomb efficiency of the charging process is less than 100% on reaching final stage of charging or under over charge conditions, the charging energy is consumed for electrolytic decomposition of water and the positive plates generate oxygen gas and the negative plates generate hydrogen gas.
There are three primary types of VRLA/SMF batteries, Sealed VR wet cell, AGM and Gel. Gel cells add silica dust to the electrolyte, forming a thick putty-like gel. These are sometimes referred to as "silicone batteries". AGM batteries feature fiberglass mesh between the battery plates which serves to contain the electrolyte. Both designs offer advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional batteries and sealed VR wet cells, as well as each other.
Amaron Quanta, Exide Powersafe is a preferred 12V VRLA/SMF batteries brand by most of India’s reputed UPS manufacturers and customers across various segments like Banks, IT Companies, BPOs, Industries, Government Departments, Hospital, and Education Institutes etc.
BatteryBhai offers VRLA/SMF, UPS batteries online at best prices. Choose wide range of Exide Powersafe, Amaron Quanta & Rocket UPS system batteries. Free delivery & installation at your door step, with EMI using Credit Card and other online payment mode.
In Gell Batteries, the electrolyte inside the battery is turned into a thick putty-like gel by the addition of silica and other gelling agents. In AGM Batteries the electrolyte in the cell is locked in fiberglass mat placed between the plates.
Off-Grid solar and wind power
Fire Alarm & Security Systems
Emergency Lighting and many more.
The most common application of VRLA/SMF batteries is in Online UPS and are therefore referred to as UPS batteries. VRLA/ SMF batteries are generally categorised in two types, that is Gell Batteries and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries.
