10 Steps to Motivate Yourself to Study

1 0 236 reads

We all know those days when you are absolutely not productive. It seems like you cannot pull yourself together and do the work you are supposed to do. Your thoughts won’t focus; you lack concentration, and you feel like doing anything but studying.

You are not alone in this struggle. This hard feeling when you force yourself to complete an assignment or conduct a research (even on the subject you are interested in) happened to all of us.

However, even though we know the feeling, we do not support you in it. No good can come from procrastination: you are wasting the precious time and missing brilliant opportunities. That is why we want to introduce you to what we believe are the most efficient ways to find inspiration and stop procrastinating.

10 steps to find motivation for studying

1.    Find a peaceful corner.

No one ever feels like studying in a noisy crowded place. So, if you have to study or write your college application essay while your roommates or siblings behave really loudly, we cannot blame you for being discouraged.

Look for some place isolated from people. It can be a library or your parents’ office while they are not using it. You can even study in a kitchen unless someone else is using it at the time being.

Pick any place you want with the only condition that it is quiet and peaceful there.

Besides, you need to stay away from places where you are likely to meet your family or friends. Thus, if you are going to the nearest café, make sure you go to a different one from the one your parents or friends like to attend.

So, do everything you can to ensure you will be left alone for some time.

2.    Avoid distractions.

Your cell phone, a favorite book, or a magazine, or whatever else you consider to be a distraction should be left aside.

By spending your time online, texting friends, or answering calls every now and then, you only lose your focus and get distracted. The thing is that your brain finds it hard to concentrate on the subject again once the focus was changed. So, not to overwhelm it with information, try avoiding distraction.

Moreover, we can tell you for sure that some people consider music to be a distraction. They say that whenever the lyrics start, they cannot help it but listen at least partially to what the song is about. It is even worse when they know the words, as then they start singing along or at least repeating the lyrics in their head.

So, if you are anything like that, try studying in silence to prevent frequent focus switching.

3.    Take small steps.

Do not aim for the stars right away. Cut yourself some slack and take smaller steps.

The truth is that we feel content when we see how small actions we take add up and become a big task completion.

So, consider writing a paragraph at a time in case you are working on a term paper, or splitting the huge chunk of work into smaller, doable pieces. Thus, college application letter writing can be divided into crafting a thesis statement, searching for evidence to back your ideas, writing an introduction, the main body, and conclusion, and then proofreading it. This way, work does not look too big and scary and you get the feeling that you can handle it all.

4.    Make lists.

This point is close to the one mentioned above. Every time you work on a big project, create a list where everything you need to accomplish goes.

Apart from helping you to see how doable this task is when splitting up into smaller tasks, it also keeps you organized.

When creating a list, you ensure that no important details will be lost. And the best part about lists is that you can put a check next to every point you have already finished. Believe us that it is a real pleasure to mark something as already finished.

So, another thing you should do is craft lists.

5.    Ask your friends to study with you.

It is always better if you can be accountable to someone. However, you should only invite those friends who are willing to study. Otherwise, they can be categorized as a distraction.

Always seek the company of highly motivated students, as by just looking at them, you will feel vigorous or at least ashamed that you are not as enthusiastic about studying as they are.

All in all, motivated companions can help.

6.    Prepare some snacks.

If you have to work on a big project, then supplies like apple chips or banana cookies are essential. In order not to lose your precious time while crafting a piece, make sure to prepare everything beforehand.

This also concerns water or other drinks. It is not merely a question of convenience, though. You need healthy snacks and water to have enough energy for studying. Lack of these essential components will lead to your total exhaustion.

7.    Set clear goals.

It is hard to outdo yourself when studying if you are not sure what exactly you are aiming for.

Therefore, we recommend you creating a clear goal. Make sure to describe everything in details. If you are working on a paper, mention its title, its target, the number of pages it should contain as well as its format or other additional information relevant to it.

Be realistic when setting these goals in order not to feel frustrated with the results at the end. Sometimes, we it’s not that we fail in accomplishing something but rather set goals we cannot achieve.

8.    Don’t overestimate your strength.

You cannot study 24/7 no matter how much you would want to. It is physically impossible. Besides, you will be exhausted and nearly useless by the end of the day.

So, when creating lists and setting goals, remember that you are merely a human and not a robot. Be realistic and only add things you can accomplish.

That is the reason why you need to take breaks. Short but frequent. When having a break, try not to dive into an entirely different area of study, but rather let your mind rest. Listen to a classic track or sit silently for a couple of minutes. This will help you refresh.

9.    Set deadlines.

Deadlines help us realize how much work we need to perform within the limited time. So, they keep us organized.

Thus, when planning your time to study, set realistic but clear deadlines you will stick to. Make sure you add spare minutes to each stage in case of an emergency or an artistic wasteland.

On the other hand, if you tend to increase the time you spend on breaks, make sure to limit these breaks as well. You know your weaknesses, so make sure you take breaks but not for too long and meet every set deadline.

10.    Get a reward.

After all the hard work you do, you need to get a reward. It is even better if you can get a reward after each stage. Take a small step on your list and get something you like. Pick some kind of an activity like watching a favorite movie for accomplishing big projects or eat a bar of chocolate for doing something smaller. No matter what you choose, you to need to get something for the sake of the effect it will have on your motivation.

These are the tips that keep many people motivated and help them get over all the laziness and procrastination.

Now, as you know our secrets and cures for procrastination elimination, tell us about your secrets. What do you do when you feel like you are stuck on something? We highly appreciate your suggestions and wish you the best in the meantime.
