Spain Burns Trump Effigies as Festival Becomes Political Battleground

There’s something darkly theatrical about burning effigies of world leaders in the streets. It’s performance art meets political protest, and this week in Valencia, Spain, it was front and center at the annual Fallas festival.

Giant sculptures of President Trump went up in flames on the final night of the celebration, continuing a tradition that’s become as much a part of the festival as the fireworks themselves. These weren’t subtle jabs either. The ninots, as they’re called, were grotesque caricatures designed to mock and ridicule. They weren’t alone either. Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu shared the spotlight in the city’s grotesque gallery.

When Festivals Become Political Statements

The Fallas festival has always had a satirical edge. It’s a celebration rooted in Valencian culture where locals build enormous sculptures throughout the city, many of them poking fun at public figures and current events. But in recent years, Trump has become a recurring target, year after year.

This time around, the timing hit different. Spain’s government has been publicly critical of Trump’s approach to Iran, pushing back against his military escalation in the region. They’ve also resisted pressure to increase defense spending, creating friction between the two countries on international policy matters.

So when those effigies burned on Thursday night, it felt less like casual festival fun and more like a statement. The crowds weren’t just watching a tradition unfold. They were witnessing a political message being sent in flames.

The Bigger Picture

What’s interesting here is how global politics increasingly bleed into cultural moments. A centuries-old festival in Spain becomes a venue for international criticism.
