Your AI assistant can now literally take the wheel of your computer. Anthropic just announced that Claude can control your keyboard and mouse, navigate your applications, and handle tasks autonomously. It’s the kind of sci-fi stuff we’ve been talking about for years, and it’s suddenly here.
The feature works on a surprisingly intuitive level. Claude will ask for permission before doing anything, then it can click around, type, scroll through files, and generally operate your computer like a human would. Need a file from your hard drive? Claude can fetch it. Want to schedule something in Google Calendar? It can figure that out too. All you need is a Claude Pro or Claude Max subscription and a Mac.
The Race to AI Autonomy
This move makes total sense when you look at what’s happening in the broader AI space. The open-source OpenClaw framework went viral earlier this year and spawned this whole ecosystem of AI tools that can act independently on your systems. Nvidia jumped in last week with NemoClaw, adding their own security layer on top. Anthropic isn’t about to let competitors own this space.
The thing is, these autonomous AI systems aren’t just useful. They’re genuinely powerful. Imagine delegating a whole category of tedious tasks to Claude. Combined with Anthropic’s new Dispatch feature, which lets you assign tasks via your phone, you could theoretically have Claude running errands while you sleep. Morning briefings, test runs, email checks. It’s the kind of convenience that makes you wonder how you ever lived without it.
But Here’s Where It Gets Messy
Security experts are already raising their hands. Handing over computer access to an AI model, even with safeguards, is like giving someone the keys to your house and hoping they don’t rearrange your furniture or steal from you.
The main concern? Speed. Agentic AI can take major actions quickly, sometimes before you even realize what’s happening. A malicious actor could theoretically hijack these tools and use your personal data or systems for things you’d never approve of. There’s also the prompt injection risk, where someone manipulates Claude’s instructions through seemingly innocent inputs.
Anthropic has implemented some protections. The system scans for vulnerabilities and certain apps handling sensitive data are disabled by default. But here’s the kicker: they’re still warning users that this is a research preview and might contain errors. That’s not exactly a vote of confidence.
The Admission Nobody’s Talking About
What really stands out is Anthropic’s own caution. They’re basically saying “this is new, it might break things, so don’t use it with sensitive data.” That’s a pretty significant caveat for a feature they’re pushing to subscribers.
The feature is currently limited to macOS, which at least narrows the potential damage surface. But this feels like the beginning of something bigger rather than the finished product.
What Actually Matters Here
The real question isn’t whether Claude can control your computer. It can. The question is whether you should let it, and under what circumstances. Computer control capabilities sound amazing until you start thinking about edge cases. What if Claude misinterprets a command and deletes something important? What if there’s a security vulnerability you haven’t heard about yet?
This is the future of technology, though, isn’t it? We’re moving toward giving AI systems more autonomy because it’s efficient, because it saves time, because it works. The security concerns are real and they’re legitimate, but they’re not going to stop this momentum.
You might find yourself trusting Claude with smaller tasks first, then gradually handing over more complex ones as you gain confidence. Or you might decide the risk isn’t worth the convenience. Either way, we’re now living in a world where your AI assistant can literally work on your computer while you’re doing something else, and that changes everything about how we think about productivity and delegation.
The real test comes when something goes wrong and you have to explain to IT why your computer was doing things you didn’t directly tell it to do.
