Apple Music's New AI Tagging System Puts the Burden on Labels (And That's the Problem)

Apple Music is making a move toward transparency around AI in music. The company sent out a newsletter to industry partners this week explaining how it’s rolling out new metadata tags that distributors can use to flag when AI is involved in creating or assisting with music uploads.

Sounds reasonable on the surface. Users want to know what’s AI-generated. Labels probably want some standardized way to disclose this. Everyone wins, right?

Not quite.

The Metadata Play That Sounds Better Than It Is

Here’s what’s actually happening. Apple is adding optional metadata fields that let distributors tag whether AI was used in specific parts of a song. You can flag the artwork, the track itself, the composition, or the music video separately. It’s granular, which is nice.

But here’s the kicker: it’s entirely opt-in.

That means the label or distributor has to manually decide to flag their AI usage. There’s no automated detection. There’s no enforcement. It’s basically trust, but make it technology.

Spotify is taking the same approach. They’re also letting distributors self-report AI content. It’s easy to implement, costs nothing, and looks good in a press release. But we all know how this tends to go with voluntary compliance systems.

The Real Issue Nobody Wants to Talk About

The problem isn’t really Apple or Spotify here. The problem is that we’ve asked the wrong people to solve this problem.

You’re asking a label or distributor to flag their own AI usage. But what incentive do they have? If they’re hoping their AI-generated track goes viral, they’re not exactly jumping at the chance to slap a big “hey, this is AI” label on it. Even if it’s just metadata that most listeners won’t see.

Some platforms like Deezer are trying to use their own AI-detection tools to catch this stuff. That’s at least trying to remove the conflict of interest. But as anyone who’s worked with AI detection knows, it’s messy. False positives, false negatives, edge cases where a human-created song looks AI-generated or vice versa.

We’re in this weird space where the technology exists to create music with AI assistance, but the detection and disclosure infrastructure doesn’t really exist in any reliable form yet.

What Users Actually Want

A Reddit user posted a mockup of this exact feature just days before Apple announced it. So clearly there’s demand. People do want to know when AI is involved.

But knowing something is AI-generated and knowing it came from an opt-in disclosure system are two different things. One tells you the truth. The other tells you what someone volunteered to tell you.

The music industry has never been great at transparency. This feels like another case of making just enough noise about doing the right thing while the actual incentives stay misaligned. Apple gets credit for addressing “AI transparency.” Distributors get a checkbox they can tick or ignore depending on what serves them best. Users get metadata that may or may not actually reflect reality.

Maybe the real question isn’t whether Apple Music’s new tagging system is good or bad. Maybe it’s whether voluntary disclosure systems ever actually work when business interests are on the line.
